Food Literacy Project Activities and Outputs
The Food Literacy Project brought together field research, academic publications, learning activities, digital educational materials, institutional visits and dissemination events carried out in Türkiye and Europe.

Field Study and Academic Publications
Within the scope of the first work package of the project, a scale was developed and field studies were carried out. Through these field studies, the level of food literacy awareness in society was measured.
With the support of the Department of Education and Publication of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, field studies were conducted across Türkiye. The findings of the survey, which included 9,293 participants from 81 provinces and 923 districts, were analysed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülcan Arusoğlu, Dr. Gökçe Çakmak Kafadar and Süleyman Agah Demirgül from Kırklareli University. As a result, the article titled “Profile of Food Consumers in Türkiye According to Gender Factor: A Cross-Sectional Study†was published.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Urhan, a faculty member at Akdeniz University, carried out the study titled “Content Analysis of Published Studies Related to Social Media and Food Literacy†within the scope of our project.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Urhan from Akdeniz University also carried out the study titled “How Social Media Can Promote Food Literacy of Young Adults†within the scope of our project.
The study titled “The Relationship Between Eco-Anxiety and Psychological Well-Being in Young Adults: The Effect of Examining Food Products†was conducted within the scope of the project by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elvan Kiremitçi Canıöz from Balıkesir University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhun Türker from Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Özkul from Sakarya University carried out the study titled “The Importance of the Food Literacy Phenomenon in Türkiye from the Perspective of Turkish Culture†within the scope of the project.
Learning, Teaching and Training Activities
Food Literacy and Food Safety Awareness Activities
Within the scope of the Food Literacy project, young people and subject-matter experts from three countries came together and carried out awareness-raising activities on food safety.
Experts from the Department of Education and Publication of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provided young participants with information on label reading, the conditions of healthy food and frequently asked questions.
The young participants also carried out label-reading activities in supermarkets.
Learning Activity in Innsbruck, Austria
The second Learning, Teaching and Training activity was held between 1–5 October 2025 in Innsbruck, Austria, hosted by the project partner Compass GmbH.
Throughout the programme, participants took part in workshops and discussions on food safety for young people, healthy nutrition, packaging and allergen awareness, and food literacy education.
They also participated in study visits in Austria to observe local best practices and innovative approaches in the field of food literacy.
Final Learning Activity in Brussels
The final learning activity of our project was held in Brussels.
Within the scope of the learning activities carried out in Belgium, hosted by our project partner Euroactiva, we visited Mr. İlhan Küçük, Member of the European Parliament of Turkish origin; Lauren Hublet, Belgian Minister of Economy and Digital Transformation; and Mr. Mehmet Kayış, Trade Attaché of the Republic of Türkiye in Brussels, and presented our project to them.
We also closely examined AFSCA, the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain, which monitors food safety from farm to fork.
All project partners fully participated in the learning activities.
In addition to observing food safety practices in Belgium on site, the learning modules, the mobile application named FoodApp, the handbook and the educational videos produced within the scope of the project were introduced both at the European Parliament and to Belgian institutions and organisations.
The Food Literacy Handbook was presented as a gift to Mr. İlhan Küçük, Member of the European Parliament of Turkish origin; Lauren Hublet, Belgian Minister of Economy and Digital Transformation; and Mr. Mehmet Kayış, Trade Attaché of the Republic of Türkiye in Brussels.
Dissemination and Promotion Activities
Mersin University — Girişim Limanı Training Hall
The promotional events of the “Food Literacy†project were held with the contribution of EKAP Association and hosted by Mersin University at the Girişim Limanı training hall.
The food application named FoodApp was introduced to Turkish, Azerbaijani, Macedonian, Kazakh, Afghan and Hungarian young people.
Information on safe food was provided during the events, which were attended by 32 participants.
Afyon Kocatepe University
We presented the book of our “Food Literacy†project to Prof. Dr. Celal Demir, a faculty member at Afyon Kocatepe University.
Hasan Kalyoncu University
We introduced the book of the Food Literacy project to students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Hasan Kalyoncu University.
Isparta Gazi Social Sciences High School
The Food Literacy project was introduced at Isparta Gazi Social Sciences High School.
We presented the “Food Literacy†book to Mustafa Kaya, Principal of Isparta Gazi Social Sciences High School.
At the conference hall of Gazi Social Sciences High School, the project book, training module and mobile application named FoodApp were introduced to 60 students from 15 high schools and Süleyman Demirel University.
The “Food Literacy†book was also presented to Recai Ocak, Isparta Provincial Director of National Education.
Tokat Governorship — Osman Paşa Mansion
The handbook, mobile application named FoodApp and web-based training portal of the “Food Literacy†project were introduced by the project partner EKAP Association at an event hosted by the Tokat Governorship at Osman Paşa Mansion.
During the event, participants were introduced to mobile applications and digital training modules that they could benefit from in the fields of food literacy and food safety.
Istanbul — Liman Ayık Yaşam Derneği
We introduced the book and the FoodApp application of our Food Literacy project in Istanbul, hosted by Liman Ayık Yaşam Derneği.
Ankara Eryaman Sınav College
We introduced the outputs of our “Food Literacy†project to students and teachers at Ankara Eryaman Sınav College.
The project book titled Food Literacy was presented by Prof. Dr. Kadir Ulusoy to Özlem Selen, the assistant principal of the school.
Eryaman Bahçeşehir College Dr. Burhan Kara Campus
We introduced our handbook, web-based training modules and FoodApp application, which are among the outputs of our “Food Literacy†project, to high school students at Eryaman Bahçeşehir College Dr. Burhan Kara Campus.
Information was provided on food safety and label-reading awareness.
Our book was presented to the school principal, AyÅŸe Demir.
Ankara — University Students
The “Food Literacy†project was introduced to university students in Ankara.
During the promotional event, the project activities and outputs, including the training module, short films, mobile application and handbook, were presented.
Mersin Governorship
The “Food Literacy†project was introduced at an event hosted by the Mersin Governorship.
During the promotional event, the project outputs, including the training module, short films, mobile application and handbook, were introduced to young participants.
Mardin Artuklu University — Faculty of Tourism
Within the scope of the dissemination activities of the “Food Literacy†project, an event was organised by Prof. Dr. Semra Gürbüz at the Faculty of Tourism of Mardin Artuklu University.
During the event, the modules developed as project outputs were introduced in detail, and information was provided about the Food Literacy book.
In addition, the project modules and educational contents were introduced to approximately 120 students in the Human, Society and Civilisation course.
The project modules and educational contents were also introduced to students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Through these activities, the Food Literacy Project reached young people, students, educators, universities, public institutions, civil society organisations and international stakeholders. The project outputs, including the handbook, learning modules, FoodApp mobile application and educational videos, continue to contribute to awareness in food literacy, food safety, label reading and healthy food consumption.
